Early 20th Century Riding Habit...
Design - We are proud to add to our collection an early women's riding habit. These habits are usually on view in museums or high end auctions and rarely available on the open market. The habit is a two piece warmer weather set with the jodhpurs and the riding jacket. The two pieces were worn together during the era and although are from the same collection, may or may not be from one maker.
The jacket features the classic A line design, where it is fitted in the shoulders, chest and arms and gradually flares out as it lengthens. This was too accommodate the wide jodhpurs and to be able to ride with some movement. The collar is a notch lapel, there is an exquisite gathering at the shoulder seams, vented back, two front waist pockets and one slant breast pocket, with four buttons up the front and two buttons on the cuffs. It was also tailored with a padding, similar to a slight shoulder pad along the front and back side of the chest, this was a feature sometime used in early riding jackets, although to what end is not clear. It also has a perfect drape due to the weights that are sewn into the jacket hem.
The jodhpurs button up the hips with four buttons on each side with one curved pockets in the front and buttons up the calves.
Material -The jacket is made from a lighter weight wool/silk blend and is lined in a black silk. The jodhpurs are made from a salt n pepper flax linen.
