Early 20th Century Riding Jacket Museum Piece...
Design - We are proud to add to our collection an early women's riding jacket from late teens to the year 1920. These jackets are often on view in museums or high end auctions and rarely available on the open market.
The jacket features the classic A line design, where it is fitted in the shoulders, chest and gradually flares out as it lengthens. This was too accommodate the wide jodhpurs and to be able to ride with some movement. The collar is single breasted notched lapel. It has one slash pocket on the left breast, four black buttons up the front and two on each sleeve. It is a finely made piece with fine stitching and detailing and horse hair construction. It is lined in a striped silk with a hidden pocket open to the front. The most interesting design element are the weights, which can be felt at the bottom of the jacket at the end of each 8 seems. The maker really wanted a particular drape. It is a wonderful piece of bespoke equestrian fashion.
Material - Navy blue wool.
Maker - The label says "Werner Shellstrop, Kingsburg, CA" We found mentions of Mr. Shellstrop being a tailor in a Newspaper article from 1912 and 1922.
